Transactions are sent directly to the data pool from that server without the need for third-party exchanges or encryption/transport software. You own the software and can transmit to the GSDN without any per-transaction costs associated with third parties.
For those companies with only a handful of GTINs, there is an inexpensive hosted option, using the same browser-based interface.
